"Germani [is a] theatre artist with the kind of commitment to social relevance, poetic language and artistic innovation that’s all too rare." - San Diego Union Tribune
"LYNX PERFORMANCE THEATRE is largely a one-man operation. Al Germani
chooses, produces and directs two or three productions a year, and his
excellent, unconventional taste has resulted in some of the best, most
challenging theater in town.
His latest, Paula Vogel’s How I Learned To Drive (March 27–May 6, 2007), is not
unique here (it was done several seasons back by the San Diego Rep) and
has won a passel of awards, including the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for drama.
But it’s still Germani’s type, nonconformist and controversial. Vogel’s
play concerns the seven-year relationship between a young girl and her
uncle, who molests her. It’s a scary premise, but the power of the
play—and the reason it was so honored—lies in Vogel’s ability to explore
the complexities of the two people and their dysfunctional relatives. And
Germani, no doubt, will mine all the gold in the script."

"If the theater is the living archive of the experiences that got us to
where we are, then San Diego’s Lynx Performance Theatre has it knocked as
a major contributor to that legacy. Founded in 2003 by Al Germani, a San
Diego director and choreographer for more than 20 years. What a lot of
people might not know is that Germani is a psychoanalyst by trade. As
such, he has a solid real-life take on the best and worst of the
characters in the plays he chooses, and his methods of coaxing those
traits from his casts are nothing short of extraordinary. The fare (like
Sarah Kane’s Crave and Stephen Adly Guirgis’ Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train)
isn’t for everybody; it’s murky and roily, and it comes from our darkest
natures. But without question, it tells our story like it is—and that,
after all, is theater in its most noble form. - Martin Jones Westlin"
