William Roetzheim’s play DICKINSON comes to San Diego for a one month
limited engagement following a critically acclaimed run in New York’s 440
Studios. The full cast of the New York production, directed by Lynx
Theatre's Al Germani, will be in San Diego performing the west coast
premier of the play that won the Seahorse award for Best Stageplay at the
Moondance International Film Festival.
According to playwright William Roetzheim the myth of Emily Dickinson is
that she was a prudish Victorian spinster who wrote beautiful poetry. The
reality of Emily Dickinson is that she was a stunning creative intellect
with an outer world that included a repressive Victorian society, an
emotionally and sexually abusive Father, and an enabling mother. Her
inner world, replete with "mental breakdowns" was an ongoing struggle to
integrate her brilliant, obsessive imagination, evolving poetic voice,
surfacing sexual feelings for women and raging emotions longing to free
themselves.
The Secret Story of Emily Dickinson brings the real Emily Dickinson to
life, with all of her depth and complexities, The production is a
captivating, magical journey presented thru the one night dream of a
frustrated playwright struggling to write a play worthy of her genius, her
poetry and her life story. This is a well researched, enchanting story of
a brilliant woman with a dazzling talent—and her struggle to evolve her
personal, artistic and sexual identity while battling her inner and outer
Demons. A quest for answers and an examination of possibilities.

Vaudeville Theatre, 2031 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego, CA 92104,
